Professional Career: – India organized their fourth attempt at Mount Everest in 1984, dubbed “Everest ’84.” Bachendri Pal was chosen to be one of six Indian women and eleven men to try the summit of Mount Everest (Sagarmatha in Nepalese). In March 1984, the crew was flown to Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, and then continued on. Bachendri reflected on her first sight of Mount Everest, saying, We, the hill folk, have always revered the mountains… my intense sensation at this awe-inspiring view was therefore religious.
In May 1984, the team began their climb. Her crew almost died whenever an avalanche buried their tent, and more than half of them dropped out due to injuries or weariness. Bachendri Pal and the rest of the crew pushed on to the peak. According to Bachendri Pal, “I was sleeping in one of the tents alongside my colleagues in Camp III at an altitude of 24,000 feet” (7,315.2 m). On the night of May 15–16, 1984, at 00:30 IST, I was startled awake; something had hit me hard; I also heard a loud sound, and soon after, I found myself immersed by an extremely cold mass of material.
