Bridges were born in the heat of the Civil Rights Movement. Bridges were born just a few days before Brown v. Board of Education was decided. The court ruled that the provision of separate public schools for white children, which black children were not permitted to attend this school. She was one of six kids who enrolled in William Frantz Elementary School. Her courage influenced Norman Rockwell’s 1963 painting “The Problem We All Live With”, which portrays a young Bridges walking to school between two sets of marshals, with a racist insult written on the wall behind them. Her narrative was also told in Coles’ children’s book “The Story of Ruby Bridges” (1995), which was inspired by his conversations with her.

Bridges were one of six black students in New Orleans to pass the exam that decided whether they could attend the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in early 1960. She went to Frantz alone, and three children were sent to McDonogh No. 19 and became known as the McDonogh Three. Bridges and her mother were taken to William Frantz Elementary by four federal marshals on the first day of school.

Bridges and her mother spent the whole first day in the principal’s office. However, on the second day, a white student broke the boycott and entered the school when Lloyd Anderson Foreman, a 34-year-old Methodist minister, led his five-year-old daughter Pam through the furious crowd, stating, “I simply want the pleasure of putting my kid to school…” After a few days, additional white parents began to bring their children, and the objections began to fade. Bridges remained the single kid in her class and would remain so until the following year. Every morning when Bridges traveled to school, one lady threatened to kill her, while another held up a black baby doll in a coffin. As a result, the U.S. Marshals assigned by President Eisenhower to ensure her safety permitted Bridges to consume only the food she brought from home.
