Ellen Naomi Cohen was born Ellen Naomi Cohen in Baltimore, Maryland on September 19, 1941. Elliot grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, with her family until moving to Baltimore at the age of 15. She attended George Washington High School before transferring to Forest Park High School.

Career

Ellen Naomi Cohen discovered her love of performing while attending Forest Park. She ultimately landed a tiny role in the play ‘The Boy Friend,’ which opened at Maryland’s Hilltop Theatre. Ellen traveled with the 1962 musical ‘The Music Man’ after graduating from high school and relocating to New York City to seek a career in the entertainment world. She then met vocalists John Brown and Tim Rose, and the trio formed the Triumvirate. Brown was replaced by James Hendricks in 1963, and the trio was dubbed ‘Big 3′. Cass recorded her debut song with the group “Winkin’, Blinkin’, and Nod” that year, which was published by FM Records. The band was featured on an “open mic” night event at Greenwich Village’s nightclub The Bitter End in 1964.

Tim Rose quit the Big Three the following year, and Elliot and Hendricks formed Mugwumps with Canadians Denny Doherty and Zal Yanovsky. The ensemble played for around eight months until Elliot went solo for a period.

Ellen Naomi Cohen appeared in two TV variety programs in the late 1960s and early 1970s: CBS’s ‘Don’t Call Me Mama Anymore’ and ABC’s ‘The Mama Cass Television Show’. She was a regular guest on variety shows and talk shows such as ‘The Mike Douglas Show,’ ‘Hollywood Squares,’ ‘The Andy Williams Show,’ ‘The Johnny Cash Show,’ ‘The Carol Burnett Show,’ and others in the early 1970s. Ellen Naomi Cohen married twice during her life. Her first marriage was to bandmate James Hendricks in 1963. The marriage was never completed and was eventually canceled in 1968. In 1967, the singer and actress gave birth to her first child, daughter Owen Vanessa Elliot. She never officially named her baby’s father, but it was eventually confirmed that Chuck Day was Owen’s father. Elliot married journalist Donald von Wiedenman in 1971. Ellen Naomi Cohen fell in the television studio of ‘The Tonight Show’ on April 22, 1974, just before her planned appearance on the late-night show. She was transported to the hospital and later released. She died on 29 July 1974, at her London residence. Keith Simpson’s autopsy later revealed that the singer died of a heart attack. She was just 32 years old at the time. She was laid to rest in Los Angeles’ Mount Sinai Memorial Park.
