Prabir Purkayastha began his career with the Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) in Bangalore as a software engineer. He worked there for almost ten years, designing software for digital switching systems. He also took involved in trade union activity and was elected general secretary of the ITI Employees Union. Purkayastha left ITI in 1984 to join the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a government-owned telecommunications research and development company. He spent nearly 15 years there as a senior scientist and project leader. He was crucial in the development of Rural Automatic Exchange (RAX), India’s first indigenous digital switching system.

Prabir Purkayastha was also involved in several social movements and campaigns including science, technology, the environment, and human rights.
