Demetriou featured 103 games for North Melbourne Football Club between 1981 and 1987, with such a three-game sojourn with Hawthorn in 1988 to round off his career. In 2003, Demetriou served as ceo of the AFL, displacing Wayne Jackson. Demetriou is most recognised for his position as the Australian Football League’s Chief Executive Officer. [3] At the end of the 2003 season, he was voted by the board of directors to relieve departing CEO Wayne Jackson.
He did schooling from his home town and graduation in bachelore of arts from La Trobe University. In acknowledgement of his important achievements to sport management and to Australian society through his leadership support of important subjects, he was bestowed the University’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009 and a Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) in 2015. He currently works as an Adjunct Professor.
