Arun Govil was born on January 12, 1952, in Ramnagar, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Shri Chandra Prakash Govil, was a government officer. Arun is the fourth of six brothers and two sisters. His elder brother Vijay Govil married Tabassum, a former child actress who hosted the first Bollywood celebrity discussion program Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan on Doordarshan for 21 years. He completed his official education at Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, where he studied engineering science and performed in several plays. He spent his teenage years in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His father wanted him to work for the government, but Arun wanted to do something that would leave an impression on people.

In 1975, he relocated to Mumbai to join his brother’s business. After a short time, he realized he wasn’t enjoying the work and decided to look for something more entertaining. After studying drama in college, he chose to pursue acting. Govil’s first break in Indian cinema came in 1977 with the film Paheli, when his sister-in-law Tabassum introduced him to Tarachand Barjatya.
