Asari Dokubo Arrest

The NDPVF’s threats to destroy oil wells and pipelines forced corporations operating in the area to withdraw the majority of their workers from the Delta, resulting in a substantial decline in oil production of 30,000 barrels per day and significantly raising the price of petroleum globally. As a result of the situation, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo summoned Asari and the leader of the NDV, Ateke Tom, to Abuja for peace talks, which largely failed. The Nigerian federal government detained and charged Asari with treason after he refused to recognize the legitimacy of the Olusegun Obasanjo regime and publicly supported self-determination for his native Ijaw people and independence for the Niger Delta. Asari was released on bail on June 14, 2007, as part of new President Umaru Yar’Adua’s commitment to bring peace to the Niger Delta region.

Asari Dokubo Early Life, Wiki, Age

Asari was born in 1964 into a middle-class Christian household in Buguma, Rivers State, to a court judge and a housewife, who also had four other children. He attended primary and secondary school in Port Harcourt and was accepted into law school at the University of Calabar, but walked out after only three years in 1990, alleging conflicts with university authorities. He tried again to finish his study, but his activism prompted him to drop out of Rivers State University of Science and Technology for reasons identical to those at Calabar, Cross Rivers State, Nigeria.

 Career

After dropping out of school, Asari opted to enter partisan politics, running for office on two unsuccessful trials in 1992 and 1998. He subsequently turned to activism, co-founding the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) in 1998 to advance the concerns of the Niger Delta’s Ijaw ethnic minority. Asari was appointed as the organization’s first vice president. The major purpose of the council is to highlight long-standing Ijaw worries about losing sovereignty over their homeland and their own lives to the Nigerian government and nearby oil firms. He was chosen president of the IYC in 2001 and headed the organization in its pursuit of “Resource Control and Self-Determination by Any Means Necessary.”

In 1998, the International Youth Council started ‘Operation Climate Change,’ a peaceful campaign and fight for freedom, self-determination, and ecological justice. The Nigerian government responded quickly by cracking down on the organization. Asari founded the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF) in 2004, which quickly became a major cause of unrest in the Delta region. Local and regional officials seeking to profit handsomely from the region’s oil resources generally supported the NDPVF, a militant movement.  In addition, the organization was involved in illegal oil bunkering and other local resource extraction. During the Obasanjo administration, Asari was prosecuted with treason in 2005, but the charges were later dropped to foster peace, leading to his amnesty by the late Umaru Musa Yaradua.
