Hodak was born and reared in Zagreb, Croatia, as the second child of a military-oriented family. Both his father and brother were army officers at the time. In his early years, he spent much of his time playing basketball and football, and he excelled at both. There was no notable figure to motivate him, and his family had no tradition of athletes, but Hodak continued for pleasure, joining his friends. Hodak began his coaching career in Malaysia with the now-defunct UPB-MyTeam, where he led them to promotion to the Malaysian Super League in 2006. He was in charge of developing UPB-MyTeam’s extremely young squad, which produced several Malaysian national players such as Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, Shakir Shaari, Bunyamin Umar, Syed Adney Syed Hussein, Stanley Samuel, Azmi Muslim, Nazrin Nawi, and Nizamuddin Akil. Hodak won the Cambodian League with Phnom Penh Crown and qualified for the AFC President’s Cup Final Round for the first time in Cambodian football history. He won the Reserve CSL with Shandong Taishan and was an assistant coach with the First Team, who lost the Chinese FA Cup final 2-1 to Tianjin Teda.

In February 2012, Hodak was appointed manager and head coach of Kelantan. During his inaugural season, he led Kelantan to a historic triple of the Malaysian FA Cup, Malaysian Super League, and Malaysia Cup. The squad also advanced to the 2012 AFC Cup quarterfinals, when they were defeated by Arbil FC of Iraq, 3-6 on aggregate.
