The Padres reduced their roster and had five consecutive losing seasons until returning to 500 in 2004 and making the playoffs the next two years. The franchise persevered with Bochy over the difficult years, which isn’t always the case in sports. Bochy departed the Padres after the 2006 season to manage the Giants.
