Ernesto Abella Early Life & Career
Professional Career: – Abella began his career in the advertising industry. Between 1975 and 1977, he worked as the Creative Director for Adformatix in Makati. He subsequently returned to Davao, where he worked as a journalist for the Davao City daily San Pedro Express and as a lecturer at his alma institution, Ateneo de Davao. In 1990, he created the Christian charismatic group Jesus Fellowship, Inc. and the Hope of Asia. He was also a member of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches and the Koinonia Theological Seminary’s board of directors.
He worked as a pastor in Davao for several years until being kidnapped by ethnic bandits in 1996. During a press conference following his selection as Presidential Spokesperson, he described how then-Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte arranged his release within 24 hours. It was then that he began to follow Duterte and actively campaigned for him in the previous elections through his writings. Abella returned to the secular world in 2002, pursuing a career in agribusiness. He was the CEO of AZ Agri-Products and the Chief Operating Officer of F&P Agri-Inputs. In Davao City, he also founded his own enterprises, One Accord Credit Cooperative and Southpoint School.
