Akpabio worked briefly as a teacher and as an associate partner with Paul Usoro & Co., a Nigerian law firm. He also worked for EMIS Telecoms Limited, a Nigerian wireless telecommunications business. He was promoted to Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the company in 2002. In this role, he was instrumental in shaping the future of the developing telecoms industry. He was previously the National Publicity Secretary of the Association of Telecommunication Companies in Nigeria, as well as an EMIS director. In 2002, he was appointed Honourable Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources by Akwa Ibom State Governor Obong Victor Attah.
He served as a Commissioner in three critical ministries between 2002 and 2006: Petroleum and Natural Resources, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Lands and Housing. In July 2019, he was nominated for a Ministerial post by President Muhammadu Buhari and reviewed by the Nigerian Senate. He was sworn in as Minister for Niger Delta Affairs on August 21, 2019.
In June 2022, Akpabio resigned as Minister for Niger Delta Affairs to run in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries but quit on the night of the primaries in favor of eventual winner Bola Tinubu.
He was elected as the Senatorial candidate for Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District a few days after the presidential primaries. However, it was riddled with suspicions of foul play by the party’s stakeholders in the state. He went on to defeat his nearest challenger, Peoples Democratic Party senator-elect Emmanuel Enoidem, garnering 115,401 votes to Enoidem’s 69,838 votes in the 2023 general elections. He was elected President of the Senate of Nigeria on June 13, 2023, with 63 votes, defeating Senator Abdulaziz Yari, a former Governor of Zamfara State, who received 46 votes.
