Hage Geingob was born on August 3, 1941, in Otjiwarongo, South Western Africa. There is no information about his parents. He acquired his early schooling in Otawi, South West Africa, using the Bantu educational system. Hage entered the Augustinum in 1958, where the majority of Namibia’s current political leaders received their education. He was readmitted and finished a teacher-training program in 1961. He then obtained a teaching post at Tsumeb Primary School in central Namibia. Geingob came to the United States in 1964 to attend Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he received a scholarship. He later earned a BA from Fordham University in New York City in 1970 and an MA in International Relations from the Graduate Faculty of The New School in 1974. In 1964, he was designated SWAPO’s envoy to the United Nations and the US. He remained in this position until 1971.

Geingob served as Namibia’s Prime Minister from 1990 to 2002, and again from 2012 to 2015. During his term as Prime Minister, Namibia’s newly independent government saw significant political events. Geingob was Minister of Trade and Industry from 2008 to 2012, during which time he helped shape economic policy and trade ties.
From November 2017 until his death, Geingob was President of the ruling SWAPO party, where he played an important role in shaping the party’s policies and direction. In August 2018, Geingob was appointed Chair of the Southern African Development Community for a one-year term, demonstrating his influence outside Namibia. February 2023, Geingob welcomed US First Lady Jill Biden, the highest-ranking US official to visit Namibia since Al Gore in 1996. In March 2023, Geingob nominated Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitawah as SWAPO’s presidential candidate for the 2024 Namibian general election.
January 2024, Geingob backed South Africa’s ICJ genocide complaint against Israel, saying, “No peace-loving human being can ignore the genocide committed against Palestinians in Gaza.” He also criticized Germany for its backing of Israel, noting the Herero and Nama genocides committed by colonial powers in what was then German South West Africa. During his term, he was known to maintain positive ties with several nations, including the United States, China, and Russia.

Geingob had brain surgery in 2013. Geingob later revealed that he had overcome prostate cancer in 2014. He had heart valve surgery in South Africa in June 2023. On January 8, 2024, Geingob said that he had been diagnosed with cancer again during a colonoscopy and gastroscopy. On February 4, Vice President Nangolo Mbumba reported that Guingob had died at Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek, where he was receiving treatment. Paya Mushelenga, Minister of Information and Communications Technology, declared that the national mourning period will begin on February 4 and end on the day of Geingob’s burial, which has yet to be determined.
