She grew up in a poor and pious home and attended a rural elementary school. She was a brilliant and motivated student who aspired to be a banker. Shehu finished primary school in 1989 and went on to the Federal Government College in Kaduna State for high school.
In 1995, she enrolled at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna State, to study English. In 1999, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and was named the top graduate student in her department. Shehu began her 10-year banking career in 2004 as a Customer Service Officer at the erstwhile Intercity Bank. In 2007, she was promoted to branch manager at the bank. She also oversaw a team of 15 employees and was in charge of the branch’s budget and accounting. Shehu joined Unity Bank in 2008 as the chief of the fund transfer department. She was responsible for ensuring that monies were transferred smoothly and securely between the bank and its clients, as well as other banks and financial organizations.
Shehu joined Access Bank in 2010 as the Head of the Clearing Unit. They also worked with the Nigerian Central Bank (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System to handle any difficulties or disagreements that arose throughout the clearing procedure. She quit the financial industry in 2014 to pursue her love for politics and public service.
