Halima Shehu was born on March 12, 1978, in the hamlet of Kafin Dagi, Katsina, Katsina State. Her parents, both farmers, raised her as their third and only child. She grew up in a poor and pious home and attended a rural elementary school. She was a brilliant and motivated student who aspired to be a banker. Shehu finished primary school in 1989 and went on to the Federal Government College in Kaduna State for high school.

In 1995, she enrolled at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna State, to study English. In 1999, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and was named the top graduate student in her department. She was also the president of the English Students’ Association and the editor of the campus newspaper. In 2000, she continued her studies by enrolling in a Master’s degree program in International Affairs and Diplomacy at ABU, Zaria.

Career

Following her studies, Halimah Shehu served in the Petroleum Trust Fund’s required National Youth Service Corps at the Afri-Project Consortium in 2003. She was employed as a project officer. Shehu began her 10-year banking career in 2004 as a Customer Service Officer at the erstwhile Intercity Bank. In 2007, she was promoted to branch manager at the bank. She also oversaw a team of 15 employees and was in charge of the branch’s budget and accounting. Shehu joined Unity Bank in 2008 as the chief of the fund transfer department. She was responsible for ensuring that monies were transferred smoothly and securely between the bank and its clients, as well as other banks and financial organizations.

Shehu joined Access Bank in 2010 as the Head of the Clearing Unit. They also worked with the Nigerian Central Bank (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System to handle any difficulties or disagreements that arose throughout the clearing procedure. She quit the financial industry in 2014 to pursue her love for politics and public service. Halima joined the People’s Democratic Party and ran for the Katsina Central House of Representatives seat in the 2015 general elections. She significantly increased the program’s coverage and effect by reaching more than 10 million people in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. President Muhammadu Buhari nominated Halima Shehu to be the National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA) in September 2023. On October 18, 2023, she was confirmed by the Senate and started office on November 1, 2023.
