In December 2015, Indian intelligence services alerted the Government of Canada of the Nijjar-led KTF’s small weapons training camp in British Columbia, but Canadian officials did not take any action against Hardeep, alleging a lack of proof. In an interview, Nijjar rejected the Indian government’s charges, stating that on 14 March 2016, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a Red Corner Notice (RCN) against him. He was apprehended by Canadian law enforcement in April 2018, however, he was freed after some time owing to a lack of actionable evidence. Nijjar then became president of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, Canada. He was said to have done so by coercing the Gurudwara committee.
The Punjab government, commanded by Captain Amarinder Singh, took Nijjar’s land in his home village the same year. According to reports, the government took 11 canals and 13.5 marlas of land. The NIA identified him as an individual terrorist in July 2020. After filing a chargesheet against Hardeep Nijjar for the murder of Hindu priest Kamaldeep Sharma in Jalandhar, Punjab, the NIA declared a reward of Rs. 10 lacs on his head in 2022.
