Indra Sjafri was appointed Technical Director of PSSI in February 2020 after coaching the U-23 national team and serving as an assistant coach for the senior national team.

Indra Sjafri was officially terminated by PSSI on November 2, 2014, after guiding the national squad across many age levels. This followed the failure of the U-19 national team, which he coached, to advance to the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand. PSSI faced a lot of criticism from the Indonesian people as a result of this action.

On September 22, 2013, Indra Sjafri led his team, the U-19 Indonesia National Team, to victory in the 2013 AFF U-19 Youth Championship Tournament, defeating the strong Vietnamese team in a dramatic match that ended in a penalty shootout, which the Indonesian team won with a score of 7- 6 after a 0-0 draw going into extra time. This is Indonesia’s first title in the last 22 years, during which time the country has not won a single title, either at the Southeast Asian or higher levels.
