When Irsay was 12, his father, Robert Irsay, purchased the Baltimore Colts after first acquiring the Los Angeles Rams and then trading franchises with Colts owner Carroll Rosenbloom. He joined the Colts’ professional staff after graduating from SMU in 1982. In 1984, one month after the Colts relocated from Baltimore to Indianapolis, he was named vice president and general manager. After his father had a stroke in 1995, Jim took over as senior executive vice president, general manager, and chief operating officer in April 1996. When his father died in 1997, Jim participated in a court struggle with his stepmother over ownership of the franchise, but he eventually became the NFL’s youngest owner at the time, at 37.
The Colts have a 258-191-1 regular season record since Jim took charge in 1995. According to Pro Football Reference, the 258 victories rank fourth in the NFL over that period. The club has won 10 division titles, 18 playoff appearances, two Super Bowls, and Super Bowl XLI.
