Shettima graduated from the Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum in 1983, after attending Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978, the Government Community Secondary School in Biu in Borno State’s southern region from 1978 to 1980, and Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978. He earned a BSc in Agricultural Economics from the University of Maiduguri in 1989. In 1993, he entered the banking industry, working for the (now defunct) Commercial Bank of Africa Limited as the head of the accounts unit at the bank’s office in Ikeja, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria. Shettima worked in the company from 1993 to 1997. He joined African International Bank Limited as a Deputy Manager in 1997 and ascended through the ranks to become a Manager in 2001. In 2001, he joined Zenith Bank as the head of its Maiduguri branch. He rose through the Zenith Bank ranks to Senior Manager/Branch Head, Assistant General Manager (AGM)/Zonal Head (North-East), Deputy General Manager/Zonal Head (North-East), and General Manager before leaving in 2007 to become Commissioner for Finance in Borno State.
Career
He was a Commissioner in five Ministries from 2007 to 2011. Engineer Modu Fannami Gubio was chosen as the ANPP’s governorship candidate in the January 2011 primaries. Gubio, however, was later assassinated by gunmen, and Shettima was elected in a second primary in February 2011. Shettima received 531,147 votes in the April 26 elections, while Muhammed Goni of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) received 450,140 votes.
He served as Commissioner of Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs in 2008, Education in 2009, Agriculture and Natural Resources in 2010, and finally, the Ministry of Health, where he contested the Governorship election in 2011 and was inaugurated on May 29, 2011. He was re-elected in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress, APC, and was unanimously elected Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, an umbrella group of Governors from the 19 northern Nigerian states. So far, he has been driving important reforms in the operations of the forum, with an emphasis on boosting northern cooperation and revitalizing struggling northern States sectors.
