Lizzie Wanyoike was born in Karuri, Muranga County, Kenya in 1951. She was the sixth child in a family of 10 siblings. Her father was a village leader, and her mother was a farmer’s wife. According to her account, the family was not well-off. Wanyoike attended Gathuki-in Primary School in Wathenje, Murang’a County, before moving on to Kahuhia Girls High School in Karuri, Murang’a County, where she finished with a high school diploma. She was then enrolled at Kenyatta University College and finished with a Diploma in Education.
Career
In 1972, she was sent to State House Girls School in Nairobi as a secondary school teacher. In 1975, she realized that working for someone else was not her job. She created the Temple College of Secretarial Studies in Nairobi, Kenya, with her husband and other business partners. Wanyoike, who served as principal and instructor at Temple, contacted management with ideas for extending the course menu and increasing the number of students, but management rejected her recommendations. In 1999, armed with KSh6 million in savings and a KSh4 million bank loan from Equity Bank Kenya Limited, she left Temple to start NIBS.
In 2000, she launched Vanoik with KSh10 million in rented space, beginning with 25 pupils and two professors. After a tough start, they gathered KSh134 million in 2010, which was utilized to construct the institute’s headquarters on a 10-acre plot of land in Ruiru-Kiambo, Kiambu County. In 2018, NIBS had over 6,000 students and over 250 instructors spread among four campuses in Ongata Rongai, Thika Town, Nairobi Central Business District, and Ruiru-Kimbo along the Thika Highway.
As of January 2018, Wanyoike was working with NIBS to create a five-star hotel in the upmarket neighborhood of Kileleshwa, some 6.5 km northwest of Nairobi’s central business area. The expansion will provide commercial services as well as practical training and internship opportunities for NIBS hospitality students. The hotel, which costs KSh400 million, is partially supported by a loan from Equity Bank Kenya Limited. Wanyoike has prior ventures in real estate and the stock market.
