Mahabir Pun is a humanitarian who has made significant contributions to Nepal’s educational and scientific growth. He successfully lobbied for the donation of used computers from Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, and the United States after returning from the United States in 2001, and powered them with two tiny hydro generators erected in a nearby stream. Pun then began giving computer classes to students and colleagues. He approached the BBC for help after experiencing communication and network issues. After the BBC publicized his predicament, some volunteers from Europe and the United States reached out to him.
Finally, Pun was the first Nepali to introduce wireless internet technologies to remote areas of the Himalayas in 2002, launching the “Nepal Wireless Networking Project” with donations and support from volunteers and foreign institutions such as the Donald Strauss Foundation, the International Centre for Applied Studies in Information Technology at George Mason University, the World Bank, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Doodle Labs, and Pacific Wire.
Some local institutions, such as E-Networking Research and Development, Gandaki College of Engineering and Sciences, and Prime College, also made significant contributions to this project. By 2013, the project has reached over 140 remote mountain settlements.
Aside from his success in developing a self-sustaining educational system, he has played an important role in the development of new economic and social enterprises in Nepal to support remote communities. Pun initiated the initiative to form a nonprofit organization entitled “Rashtriya Abiskar Kendra” or “National Innovation Centre” in 2012, to establish the Innovation and invention center to stimulate research and development. Since its inception in 2012, this institution has aided Nepal’s economic development. Pun debuted his TV show “Aviskar” on Nepal’s first 4K TV channel, Galaxy 4K, in 2021.
