Career

He joined the Nairobi People’s Convention Party and quickly rose to the position of Secretary-General. He later resigned to become a youth leader for the Kenya African Democratic Union, alongside future President Daniel Moi and Ronald Ngala. Shikuku was elected Butere Constituency MP on the KADU ticket in 1963. Soon after, his party united with the Kenya African National Union KANU, the only legal party in Kenya during the subsequent single-party era. Shikuku was the last member to cross the House floor to join the new administration formed by the merger of Kanu and Kadu.

In 1969, he was named Assistant Minister in the Office of the Vice-President and Home Affairs by President Jomo Kenyatta. Shikuku was later imprisoned by Kenyatta after jokingly referring to the KANU government as “dead.” He was issued in 1978, after Kenyatta’s death, when Daniel Arap Moi took over as President. Shikuku regained his parliamentary seat in Butere the next year and was appointed Assistant Minister for Livestock Development. He kept his seat in the 1983 elections but lost it in 1988.

Kenya’s single-party system began to splinter in the early 1990s.  He co-founded the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy with Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. The forum eventually split, with Odinga forming the Ford-Kenya party and Shikuku Ford Asili teaming up with Kenneth Matiba. The 1992 general election was Kenya’s first multiparty election since the 1960s. Matiba ran for president on the Ford Asili ticket, while Shikuku won the Butere MP seat on the Ford Asili ticket. Matiba later quit Ford Asili, and Shikuku was the party’s presidential candidate in the 1997 elections. He received few votes and hence lost his parliamentary seat.
