Martin Shikuku Oyondi was born on December 25, 1932, in Magadi, Kenya. At the time of his death, he was 79 years old. Shikuku attended St Peters Mumias Boys Primary School in western Kenya, a Catholic school. After finishing primary school, he enrolled at St. Peters Seminary for high school to become a Catholic priest. This was not to be, as he reportedly fell in love and dropped out of the seminary.

Career
He joined the Nairobi People’s Convention Party and quickly rose to the position of Secretary-General. He later resigned to become a youth leader for the Kenya African Democratic Union, alongside future President Daniel Moi and Ronald Ngala. Shikuku was elected Butere Constituency MP on the KADU ticket in 1963. Soon after, his party united with the Kenya African National Union KANU, the only legal party in Kenya during the subsequent single-party era. Shikuku was the last member to cross the House floor to join the new administration formed by the merger of Kanu and Kadu.
In 1969, he was named Assistant Minister in the Office of the Vice-President and Home Affairs by President Jomo Kenyatta. Shikuku was later imprisoned by Kenyatta after jokingly referring to the KANU government as “dead.” He was issued in 1978, after Kenyatta’s death, when Daniel Arap Moi took over as President. Shikuku regained his parliamentary seat in Butere the next year and was appointed Assistant Minister for Livestock Development. He kept his seat in the 1983 elections but lost it in 1988.
