Martine Tanghe was born in Bellem but relocated to Bissegem as a kid with her family. She then attended a boarding school in Kortrijk, where she studied Latin and Greek. Frans Destoop, her Dutch/German tutor, was also a BRT journalist from 1976 to 1978. Tanghe studied Germanic philology at KU Leuven and began teaching Dutch summer courses to Latin American political exiles. She passed the old BRT journalists test in December 1977, together with Leo Stoops, Paul Jambers, Jef Lambrecht, and Geert van Istendael. The selection began in September with a thousand candidates and finished in December with eleven. Tanghe, along with Lea Cornelis, was the only lady to have survived the notorious journalist exam.
Career
She began working for the public broadcaster BRT on February 1, 1978. A few months later, she succeeded newsreader Monique Delvaux in Het Journaal as the first female journalist of the then-BRT news service. In her early years, she balanced reporting at home and abroad with studio presentations of Het Journaal. Tanghe initially took a year off from work in the 1980s to sail halfway around the world with her husband. She appeared once in the 1990 series Samson en Gert. She temporarily left the VRT again at the end of 1991 to become a spokesman for the Flemish Parliament. After serving on the jury of the dictation for years, she began reading the Groot Dictee der Nederlandse Taal every year on December 19, 2005.
Freek Braeckman took over as presenter in 2015. She was also a board member of the Dutch language organization Genootschap Onze Taal from 2009 to 2017.
She co-hosted the talk show Volt with Kobe Ilsen from 2008 until 2011.
