Tariq Jameel was born on June 23, 1953, in Mian Channu, Punjab, Pakistan. Jameel is from a wealthy Punjabi Rajput family descended from Prithviraj Chauhan, a 12th-century monarch. During the reign of Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century, his family governed Tulamba, a town near Mian Channu, and dispersed the areas around Tulamba. Dr. Muhammad Tahir Kamal Sahu, his younger brother, is a well-known cardiologist who works at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology in Lahore. Jameel finished his elementary schooling at Lahore’s Central Model School. He attended Government College University in Lahore and Jamia Arabia in Raiwind for his Islamic education, where he studied the Qur’an, hadiths, Sufism, logic, and Islamic law. Jameel enrolled at King Edward Medical College after completing a pre-medical education at Government College Lahore, but he dropped out before completing his MBBS to pursue religious study.

Career

Jameel is from the Deobandi school of thought and has presented religious lectures all around the world. He advocates for ethnic and religious peace. Jameel’s lectures revolve around “self-purification, avoidance of violence, observance of Allah’s orders and pursuing the way of Prophet Muhammad” . Since 2012, Jameel  has been ranked one of the world’s 500 most influential Muslims by Jordan’s Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought.

In April 2020, he blamed the breakout and spread of COVID-19 on God’s vengeance against dishonesty in society and female immodesty. In addition to praying for the country’s well-being and the abolition of vice, he stated that “when a Muslim’s daughter practices immodesty and the youth (boys) indulge in immorality, then Allah’s torment is upon such a nation.” Human rights activists and other elements of Pakistani society were outraged by the statements. Shireen Mazari, Human Rights Minister, replied by saying that “misogynistic” and “ignorant” statements blaming women and youth for the continuing coronavirus outbreak were “absolutely unacceptable.”
