Monica Kimani landed in Nairobi on September 19, 2018, after visiting Juba to collect funds for a business agreement. She informed her brother George Kimani that she was leaving for Dubai the following day to celebrate her birthday and prepare for her wedding. She went to her flat in Lamuria Gardens, Kilimani, near Dennis Pritt Road, and asked a few pals around for drinks. Among the visitors to her flat, that night was a Lebanese neighbor, a Kenyan neighbor, and a guy who introduced himself as Dominic Kamau. At approximately 9 p.m., the neighbors left Monica and the man dressed in white robes in the flat. The man was eventually identified as Joseph Irungu Kuria, aka Joe Jovi, the fiancee of Citizen TV newscaster Jack Wangui Maribe. Irungu was a former security guard who had operated in the Middle East and got security contracts for party events.
According to the prosecution, Irungu killed Monica that night by slicing her throat and putting her corpse in a bathtub with her hands and legs bound and gagged. She then left the flat at about 3.35 a.m. in a silver Toyota Alien, KCA 031E, which belonged to Maribe. She was caught on street cameras in a vehicle with an unidentified male. The next day, Monica’s brother, George, who had been unable to contact her all night, decided to visit her flat with her girlfriend to check on her. They entered the flat with the assistance of a neighbor and a friend and discovered her corpse in the bathroom.
