In 2013, he earned a United Nations award for public service.

On June 6, 2018, he was appointed general secretary of the All India Congress Committee, with responsibility for the state of Andhra Pradesh. At the time of his death, he was also a member of the Congress Working Committee.

Who is Oommen Chandy

Oommen Chandy was an Indian politician and statesman who served as Kerala’s 10th Chief Minister for two terms, from 2004 to 2006 and again from 2011 to 2016. He was the only Indian Chief Minister to earn a United Nations award for public service. Oommen has held the Puthuppally constituency in the Kerala Legislative Assembly since 1970, making him the state’s longest-serving MLA. In 2018, Oommen Chandy was named General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) for Andhra Pradesh.  The President of several INTUC-affiliated trade union organizations. Oommen Chandy died in 2023 while receiving cancer treatment in Bengaluru.

Chandy was born in Puthuppally, Kottayam district, on October 31, 1943. He was 70 years old at the time of his death. Chandy entered politics as a member of Kerala’s largest student organization, Kerala Students Union (KSU), which is the student arm of the Indian National Congress party. He was the KSU unit president at St. George High School in Puthupally before becoming the organization’s state president. Chandy earned a B.A. in Economics from St. Berchmans College in Changanassery after completing his pre-university course at CMS College in Kottayam. Later, he graduated from the Government Law College in Ernakulam with a bachelor’s degree in law (LL.B).

Career

Won the Puthuppally constituency in Kerala Legislative Assembly elections on an INC ticket, defeating E. M. George of the CPI(M) party with 7,288 votes. He served in the Kerala Legislative Assembly for five decades, representing the Puthuppally constituency in elections held in 1970, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021. Contested and defeated BLD candidate P. C. Cherian in the 1977 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections for the second time.  Won the Kerala Legislative Assembly elections for the third time on an INC-U ticket, defeating NDP candidate M. R. G. Panicker by 13,659 votes.

For the fourth time, he won the Kerala Legislative Assembly elections in 1982, defeating an ICS candidate, Thomas Rajan, by 15,983 votes. Contested and won the Kerala Legislative Assembly elections in 1987 and 1991, defeating CPI(M) candidate V. N. Vasavan by 9,164 and 13,811 votes, respectively. In 1991, he was named convener of the United Democratic Front (UDF). Contested and won the Kerala Legislative Assembly elections in 1996 with a margin of 10,155 votes. In 2001, he was elected as the UDF convener. Won the 2001 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections by 12,575 votes over CPI(M) candidate Cherian Philip. In 2006, he won the Kerala Legislative Assembly elections for the tenth time with a margin of 19,863 votes.

Contested and won the 2011 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections, defeating CPI(M) candidate Suja Susan George by 33,255 votes; the Congress’ legislative party then overwhelmingly chose him as its leader.

Oommen Chandy died on July 18, 2023, at 4:25 a.m., following a long illness in a private hospital in Bengaluru. He has been undergoing cancer treatment since 2019.
