Pacita AbadPacita Abad Biography, Wiki, Boyfriend, Net Worth:- Pacita Abad was a Filipino modern painter born in Basco, Batanes. She studied painting at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC, as well as The Art Students League in New York, NY. She traveled the world painting after finishing art school, visiting over 80 countries. Abad’s travels had a profound effect on her life and work. She was a very innovative and experimental painter, and her style altered all the time over her career, which began in the 1970s. Her early paintings were largely figurative and social or political, addressing issues such as poverty.

Her work then evolved to encompass naturalist subject matter, which she was inspired by when traveling to foreign countries. This vibrantly colored work of patterns transitioned into her most well-known career as an Abstract painter. The materials used in these mixed media pieces, which spanned from large-scale paintings to small collages, included porcelain, glass, mylar, fabric, and circuit boards. Abad rejected the notion that painting was an elitist pursuit, and she was always inspired by the local materials and techniques she saw on her travels.

She was born in Basco, Batanes, Philippines on October 5, 1946, and died on December 7, 2004, at the age of 58. In 1967, Abad graduated from the University of the Philippines with a BA in political science. She moved to the United States in 1970 to study law, but instead got an MA in Asian History at Lone Mountain College in 1972, where she supported herself as a seamstress and typewriter. Abad studied painting in Washington, D.C.’s Corcoran School of Art and New York City’s Art Students League. She has lived and worked in over 50 countries, including Guatemala, Mexico, India, Afghanistan, Yemen, Sudan, Mali, Papua New Guinea, Cambodia, and Indonesia. Pacita studied under Berthold Schmutzhart and Blaine Larson at the Corcoran School of Art, where the two professors helped establish her artistic career.

Career

Her early works were mostly figurative sociopolitical pieces of individuals and primitive masks. Another series included large-scale paintings featuring aquatic sceneries, tropical flowers, and fauna. Pacita’s most significant body of work, however, is her brilliant, colorful abstract work on a variety of materials ranging from canvas and paper to bark cloth, metal, ceramics, and glass. Abad made almost 4,500 works of art. Just a few months before her death, she painted the Alkaff Bridge in Singapore, covering it with 2,350 multicolored circles.

Abad created a trapunto painting method that involved stitching and stuffing her painted canvases to create a three-dimensional, sculptural impression. She subsequently began adding traditional cloth, mirrors, beads, shells, plastic buttons, and other things to the surface of her paintings.

Pacita had also garnered various honors throughout her artistic career, the most notable of which was her first. In 1984, Pacita got the TOYM Award for Art in the Philippines. Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) is an award that has only been granted to men for the last 25 years until Pacita Abad became the first woman to receive it in 1984. Pacita’s acceptance of the honor sparked widespread outrage, with angry messages addressed to editors of published newspapers from males and male artists who believed they, not Pacita, should have gotten the award.
