Pius Akinyelure was born in Ondo State, Nigeria, on October 10, 1942. He is of the Yoruba ethnic group, which is one of Nigeria’s largest and most powerful. Pius received his secondary education at St. Joseph’s College in Ondo. He then attended the University of Ibadan, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1966. In 1971, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Chemistry from the same university.

Pius Akinyelure began his career as a lecturer at the University of Ibadan, where he spent six years teaching Chemistry. In 1977, he joined Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc, a subsidiary of the American oil company ExxonMobil. In 1992, he progressed through the ranks to become the company’s Executive Director, a post he maintained until his retirement in 2002. He was in charge of the company’s marketing, distribution, and retail activities in Nigeria. He was also instrumental in the growth of Nigeria’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sector, as well as the introduction of unleaded gasoline and low-sulfur diesel. Pius is the founder and chairman of Banji Pius Akinyelure & Sons Limited, an oil and gas, banking, manufacturing, and agriculture conglomerate. He is also the chairman of First Atlantic Bank Plc, a Nigerian commercial bank. He also serves on the boards of many other corporations, including Nigerian Breweries Plc, Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc, and Nigerian Bottling Company Plc. Akinyelure is also a politician and the head of Nigeria’s leading political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was chosen as the party’s National Vice Chairman (Southwest) in 2014 and re-elected in 2018.
