Chakraborty grew up in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. She is from a Bengali Hindu household. Her father retired as an engineer, and her mother is a housewife. Her younger brother is a software engineer. Piya finished her education at the famous Ashok Hall Girl’s Higher Secondary School in Kolkata. She was always interested in music and social sciences and was involved in a variety of cultural and academic activities. She was also an excellent student who excelled in her board examinations. Piya earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Presidency College in Kolkata, one of India’s oldest and most prestigious universities. She was a deserving student who received several prizes and scholarships for her academic achievements.

She also acquired a strong interest in research and activism while at college, and she became involved in several groups and societies. Piya then pursued a post-graduate degree in Sociology at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata, a prestigious research institute associated with Jadavpur University. Career

Piya began her career as a sociology instructor at Lady Shri Ram College for Women in New Delhi, one of India’s major women’s institutions. For two years, she taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in sociology, gender, and development. She also had several papers and articles published in national and international journals and periodicals. She joined Anjali Mental Health Rights Organization, a non-governmental organization located in Kolkata, in 2019. Anjali Mental Health Rights Organization strives to obtain large-scale structural improvements in the mental health profession by making mental health institutions, processes, and communities intersectional and inclusive.

She was appointed as the director of the Voices Programme, which aims to give psychosocial assistance, advocacy, and empowerment to persons with mental illnesses living in state-run mental institutions and communities. Piya is the leader of a team of barefoot mental health professionals who engage with hospital residents and community people to enhance their quality of life, dignity, and rights. She also works with the state government, the media, and other civil society organizations to influence policy and raise public awareness about mental health concerns.

Piya has helped bring about substantial changes in the lives of those suffering from mental illnesses in West Bengal. She has assisted numerous hospital residents in reintegrating into society and finding meaningful employment and relationships. Piya has also established community safety nets and self-help groups to assist and care for persons with mental health problems.
