Major Priya was released in 2003 after 10 years of meritorious service at the Judge Advocate General Department, where she conducted multiple Court Martials. Priya has long advocated for women to be allowed equal roles in the Indian Army as men. She supported women in the Indian Army as a right in the aftermath of Lieutenant Sushmita Chakravarty’s tragic suicide, in which the then Vice-Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen S Pattabhiraman, was forced to apologize for an inappropriate statement regarding women in the army.
She constantly fought for permanent commissions and granted women commanders command of units in the Indian Army after she retires from the army. Her thoughts were published in The Times of India on February 17, 2020, and decision-makers took heed of them. In February 2020, 17 years after she was discharged from the army, the Supreme Court of India issued a judgment allowing equal opportunity for women to command units in the Indian Army.
