Career

After graduating from law school in 1968, Giuliani volunteered for Robert F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign while also clerking for United States District Judge Lloyd Francis MacMahon of the Southern District of New York. In 1970, he joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, and within a few years, he was promoted to Chief of Narcotics Unit and Executive U.S. Attorney. He returned to Washington in 1981 to serve as President Reagan’s Associate Attorney General, the Justice Department’s No. 3 post, and a few years later, Giuliani was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Just when Giuliani’s dynamism appeared to be diminishing as his leadership approaches offended diverse sensitivities, he reappeared as a formidable leader amid the 9/11 attacks in 2000. He was recognized for his involvement during the city’s darkest hours when he coordinated rescue efforts that saved about 20,000 lives and emerged as the national voice of hope and support.

In 2008, Giuliani chose to run for the Republican presidential nomination, but his campaign was a failure, even though many revered him for his contributions to New York City.
