Starting her political career early, Sarah McBride got involved in a state-level campaign when she was just 13 years old. Throughout her journey, she accrued valuable experience by working alongside former Governor Jack Markell and Attorney General Beau Biden.

LGBTQ+ Advocacy
In 2011, Sarah McBride publicly revealed her transgender identity. Two years later, she became a member of Equality Delaware’s board and emerged as a prominent champion for transgender rights within the state. McBride actively campaigned for the Gender Identity Nondiscrimination Act, which effectively prohibited discrimination on the basis of gender identity. Governor Jack Markell endorsed the bill and it officially became law in June 2013. As a recognition of her efforts, Markell honored McBride with the Order of the First State.
Following the passage of the law, Sarah McBride collaborated with the Center for American Progress. Subsequently, she assumed the role of national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign. Additionally, McBride achieved the passing of the Digital Citizenship Education Act and the Protect Medicaid Act. Sarah McBride declared her intention to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in June of 2023, with the goal of representing Delaware’s at-large congressional district. In September of 2024, McBride emerged victorious in the Democratic primary and secured the position as the Democratic nominee.
