On June 29, 2023, the pair went to a lawyer in Bulandshahr to get married officially; however, when the lawyer saw Seema’s Pakistani passport, he called the police. When authorities stormed their rented accommodation on 30 June 2023 in Ballabgarh, the couple had already departed the room and were attempting to flee the city.
The Rabupura Police Station received an FIR number 159/2023 against Seema for unlawfully entering India, Sachin Meena, and his father, Netrapal Singh aka Nittar, for illegally assisting and sheltering an illegal person. They were then imprisoned at Luksar Jail. On 6 July 2023, Netrapal was granted bail, while Sachin and Seema were granted bail on 7 July 2023 by Justice Nazim Akbar of the Jewar Civil Court’s Junior Division; they were freed from jail at 8:30 a.m. on 8 July 2023. The court also ordered them to remain in the same residence until the final ruling.
