Sergio Ermotti was born on May 11, 1960, in the Italian-speaking city of Lugano, Switzerland. He aspired to be a professional player or a sports instructor after finishing high school. Before turning 18 and enrolling in college to pursue his dreams, Ermotti opted to spend his time by working as an apprentice at the Cornèr Bank in Lugano to “come up to speed with accounting, finance, and so on.” Fascinated by foreign currency trading, he enrolled in a training program at the bank’s Securities Department. He got a Swiss federal banking expert qualification and subsequently in his banking career, he graduated from Oxford University’s Advanced Management Program.
