Ski Johnson founded Wide-A-Wake Records with Larry Toye and Malcolm Alexander in 1988, while still a student at Howard University, and published his debut album, “Ski Johnson and Friends on the Rise.” Among others who performed were Grammy-nominated pianist Marc Cary and others. The album became an instant hit, airing on over 400 radio stations throughout the country. Following the publication of “Following a Rainbow” in 1989, both albums were heavily played on WHUR RADIO in Washington DC. Ski Johnson released his debut live album “Ski Johnson Live” in 1990 and began producing and signing Rap and R&B performers to his Wide-A-Wake Records label.
Johnson got national attention the same year, following years on the Washington supper club and festival circuit, by touring with R&B performers Brian McKnight and Walter Beasley.
