In 2008, she made her directorial debut with Andhra Andagadu, a Telugu film. In 2016, she received the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Tamil for her film Irudhi Suttru (Saala Khadoos in Hindi). Guru, the Telugu adaptation of the film, was also directed by her (2017). Kongara wrote the script for Mitr, My Friend, an English film (2002). She performed as an assistant dean for Mani Ratnam for seven years. In 2008, she launched her directorial debut with the Telugu film Andhra Andagadu, featuring Krishna Bhagavaan, but it was a flop. Sudha invited Madhavan, who was going to take a break from Tamil films at the time, to take the main part in the film in mid-2013, and his participation in the movie helped improve the venture’s financial feasibility.
