Tamilisai Soundararajan was born on June 2, 1961, in Kaliyakkavilai, Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. Kumari Ananthan, her father, is a former Member of Parliament and prominent leader of the Indian National Congress in Tamil Nadu, while Krishna Kumari is her mother. She graduated from Ethiraj College for Women, studied MBBS at Madras Medical College in Chennai, and earned a degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Dr. MGR Medical University in Chennai. She received training in Sonology and FET Therapy in Canada. Prior to her political involvement, she spent 5 years as an Assistant Professor at Ramachandra Medical College in Chennai.
Career
Growing up in a political family, Soundararajan developed an interest in politics from a young age. She was chosen to the position of student leader at Madras Medical College. She held numerous roles in the Tamil Nadu state BJP unit, including South Chennai District Medical Wing Secretary in 1999, State General Secretary Medical Wing in 2001, All India Co-Convenor in 2005, State General Secretary in 2007, and State Vice President in 2010. In 2013, she was promoted as National Secretary of the All India BJP. She was named Governor of Telangana on September 1, 2019, by President of India Ram Nath Kovind, and is currently the state’s first woman governor.
He became Telangana’s Governor on September 9, 2019. On February 16, 2021, she was given additional responsibility of Puducherry, making her the fifth woman to hold the Union Territory’s office. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she spoke with hospital staff and promoted vaccinations. Soundararajan has failed to become an MP or MLA in all of her previous attempts, having run in two assembly elections and one Parliament election. In the 2019 Indian general election, she was defeated by Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, the daughter of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, from Thoothukudi. She campaigned actively throughout the state for the Parliament and Assembly elections.
