Vishnu Dev Sahay was born on February 21, 1964 (age 59 as of 2023) in Bagiya village, Kansabel tehsil, Jashpur district, Chhattisgarh (then Madhya Pradesh), India. Ram Prasad Sai, his father, was a farmer, and Jashmani Devi, his mother, was a housewife. Omprakash is his younger brother. He belongs to the Scheduled (ST) and practices Hinduism. In 1981, he completed his secondary education at Loyola Higher Secondary School in Kunkuri, Jashpur. He did not attend college and instead entered politics at an early age.
Career
Vishnu Dev Sahay began his political career in the 1980s by joining the BJP and winning the Sarpanch elections in his village Bagia unchallenged. In 1990, he became a first-time MLA by winning the Tapkara parliamentary constituency in Madhya Pradesh. In 1993, he was re-elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Tapkara seat. He was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha for the first time in 1999, after winning the Raigarh seat in Madhya Pradesh (later Chhattisgarh). In 2004, 2009, and 2014, he was re-elected to the 14th, 15th, and 16th Lok Sabha from the same seat.
He served on several parliamentary committees, including the Committee on Absence of Members from House Session, the Committee on Food, Civil Supplies, and Public Distribution, the Committee on Information Technology, the Committee on Water Resources, and the Committee on Commerce. In the first Modi government, he was named Union Minister of State for Mines, Steel, and Labour and Employment. He then resigned from the Mines and Labour and Employment posts but remained the Minister of State for Steel until 2019.
